Celebrity Activists and Eco Friendly Celebrities

Celebrity Activists

Sometimes, despite their best efforts to live abundantly in ways that we can't imagine, celebrity activists do cool things for the environment, social issues, and the planet. Sometimes they act like idiots, too. We write about both.

If you want to be more sustainable (like some of these celebrities) there are plenty of ways to go green by adopting ways of living green and adopting a vegetarian diet.

Weekly Update: The Do-Good Celebrity

It’s no secret that we enjoy reporting on the philanthropic side of celebrity. Some of the TGB team does live in LA, so the glitz and the glam goes with the territory (we get obsessed!). Here’s a run down of some of the celebrity good that has been talked about this week.

Motley Crue Teams with Whiskey for Charity

The love of Motley Crue runs deep here at Tiny Green Bubble, which is why we’re excited to learn about their upcoming offering at the Sunset Strip Music Festival (which at least one of us will be at!). In perhaps one of the most fitting charity partnerships ever, Motley Crue has partnered with Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey.

We simply cannot control ourselves when it comes to making juvenile reference to balls, and we aren’t going to embarrass ourselves by pretending to be sorry. We’re too busy laughing. However, Shakira was in Miami last week for a new Soccer for Youth Development and Healthy Living campaign.

If you are in the Los Angeles area on August 24, consider checking out the Red Hot Chili Pepper at LA Live’s Club Nokia. The band will be performing to raise money for the Silverlake Conservancy of Music, an organization co-founded by bassist, Flea.

pharrell makes a differenceFew things in life make a man hotter than when he does something to help children, and since Pharrell Williams was already blazingly hot (and with a voice that melts us) to begin with, the fact that he’s about to open a youth center in his hometown of Virginia Beach, VA makes him just about irresistible. The Pharrell Williams Resource Center will work to help young people follow their dreams of working in the arts. We don’t want to sound old and crodgity, but we’re just happy that there are still young people with dreams!

If you have some extra pennies rolling around in your pocket, and a unapologetic addition to TMZ, consider bidding your way to celebrity bliss while you help raise money for Russell Simmons’ Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation.

wiley one go green single for biofuelIf there is one thing we are confident saying about the majority of eco friendly living lovers out there, it’s that we all enjoy a little singer-songwriter music. Now, you can add to your “mid-day coffee mix” while also supporting a great band that focuses on environmental education. The Wiley One, a self-described acoustic hip hop groove band out of Arizona, have released the single “Go Green” on iTunes, and when you download the admittedly catch jam, a portion of the purchase will be donated to the Zero Hero Scholarship Fund. But there’s so much more green good here.

Photo credit ryn413 on Flickr Creative CommonsThe last time we wrote about Lady Gaga, she was wearing a meat dress that made her look like she was a shark attack victim. Now, she’s loaning her song “Teeth” to the promo for this year’s upcoming Discovery Channel Shark Week for a promo video (see it after the jump) that features Andy Samberg. Samberg, the SNL cast member and linchpin of hysterical comedy song videos (Michael Bolton!), is the first ever Discovery Channel Chief Shark Officer (we were really hoping for that job!)

Charlotte York Goes Hungry

kristin davis for oxfamBack in the Sex and the City days, Kristin Davis’ character Charlotte York would never have gone hungry – there were too many posh Fifth Avenue restaurants to enjoy. However, in her post-SATC life, Davis has been traveling with Oxfam to learn more about the food crisis in Kenya. And what she’s learning should be paid attention to, because the global food shortage is an increasingly important topic that will need to be addressed not just by celebrities but also by governments and, yes, individuals.

Roger Federer, the Swiss tennis champion, whom you may have heard of due to his appearance in an unprecedented 23 career Grand Slam finals, has a lot going on. His tennis career continues to grow, his sponsorship and endorsement deals keep him busy (and wealthy), and his wife probably demands some attention too. But that’s not stopping him from getting his charity on to help the children of Malawi, through his Roger Federer Foundation.
