Weekly Update: The Do-Good Celebrity

Written by Alice Winchester

It’s no secret that we enjoy reporting on the philanthropic side of celebrity. Some of the TGB team does live in LA, so the glitz and the glam goes with the territory (we get obsessed!). Here’s a run down of some of the celebrity good that has been talked about this week.

1.    If you haven’t heard, last week there was a fatal stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair. Five people died and 40 others were injured. Train and Maroon 5 were scheduled to play on August 18 at the Fair, but that concert has been moved to a new location and all proceeds from the concert are being donated to the State Fair Remembrance Fund.

2.    Colin Firth has donated his shoes to The Small Steps Project, which will host a celebrity auction in London on October 12. All proceeds will go toward The Small Steps Project, which helps children living in poverty on “rubbish dumps” around the world. Other celebrities who have donated shoes include Sienna Miller, Helen Mirran, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Boy George. That’s right, Boy George.

3.    Mandy Moore has teamed with Nothing But Nets to bring anti-malaria nets to Cameroon. The actress has been an ambassador for Population Services International, and travelled to Cameroon with them last week. A child dies every 45 seconds from malaria, a disease spread through a single mosquito bite.

“I’m meeting the people who need these nets to stay safe from malaria—from two-year-olds to the Prime Minister,” said Moore. “I’m proud to be a part of this historic effort that will save thousands of lives here in Cameroon, and grateful for the help of so many American supporters who are donating to make this possible.”

4.    Sophia Bush, who ran the San Francisco Marathon in July, raising money for the Nature Conservancy, is continuing her support for the organization by designing a limited-edition bobble – a reusable bottle that filters water as you drink.  50% of the purchases go toward the Nature Conservancy. You can buy your bottle here.

5. True Blood star Kristin Bauer is urging the European Commission to encourage cosmetic companies to move away from testing on animals.

“No animal should suffer and die to test lipstick or eye shadow,” she wrote in the letter to Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy John Dalli. “That’s why I’m writing to urge you to keep the European Union on the path to modern, innovative cosmetics testing. Please maintain the EU’s 2013 deadline for banning the marketing of animal-tested cosmetics.

“Here in the United States, many cosmetic companies have stopped using animals in such tests, but others need incentive to make progress. The EU’s 2013 deadline sends a strong message to companies in Europe and America—and around the world—that it’s time to move away from inhumane animal tests and toward better, more human-relevant methods for testing cosmetics and other products.

And there you have it! Stay tuned for more Do-Good Celebrity news each week!
