College Graduation Gowns Made From Recycled Bottles Rule!
College graduation ceremonies have been happening across the nation for several weeks now and will continue for the next handful of weeks as a new batch of highly educated young adults enter the work force and leave behind the “good times” that the rest of us fondly remember! For a number of universities, however, graduation has become an even more eco friendly activity as they have adopted graduation gowns made of recycled plastic bottles.

It is difficult today to talk about public education in the U.S. without mentioning teacher layoffs, program cutbacks, and demonstrations. The state of California is one instance, where proposed education cuts recently prompted large-scale protests statewide. Fourth Annual Good Jobs, Green Jobs Conference Roundup
The blogosphere and the Net are humming with news about the 2011 Good Jobs, Green Jobs National Conference that took place February 8th through February 10th in Washington, D.C. The 2500-plus conference attendees were diverse, from environmentalists to union members. This forum, presented by the Blue Green Alliance Foundation, offered more than 100 assorted workshops plus numerous panels that featured a high-powered agenda whose goal was to: share ideas and strategies to build a green economy that creates good jobs, reduces global warming, confronts other environmental problems, and preserves America’s economic and environmental security. Based upon that objective, I can’t help but think that some conference attendees likely wished they could have been in two places at once during the event so they wouldn’t miss a thing!
Green Jobs That Pay: Carbon Professionals Salaries on the Rise
What green job should you look for if you want to make sure that you’re on an upward salary track? According to green recruitment agency Acre the consultancy Acona, which together recently polled 944 sustainability professionals, you want to be a carbon and climate change professional. That group of skilled workers has an increasing demand, made four percent more this year than last year and feel incredibly secure in their jobs. How many of us can say that?
Does the Glass Ceiling Exist in the Green Economy?
Here’s a fun exercise to try: use the term glass ceiling during a conversation with friends at your next get-together. Next, notice how many strange glances you get or if an uncomfortable silence arises. Then, count on someone remarking, “oh, that’s so ‘80’s” or “that doesn’t exist anymore.”

Green Jobs Training Given to Former Offenders and Hard to Employ People
Often, and often unfairly as well, former offenders who have served their time and been rehabilitated or paid their debt to society faces a cruel catch 22 upon returning to society. Their criminal record makes them unemployable, but without employment their chances of returning to crime are exponentially increased. Spectrum Resources, a Des Moines, Iowa-based organization that provides resources to former offenders and hard-to-employ individuals will be adding green jobs training to their program to help ease this situation with the aid of a quarter million dollar grant.
College Students Don’t Understand the Science Behind Global Warming
It should be noted that nothing in this article will say that we should be raising our kids “The Chinese Way” (and if you haven’t been reading the buzz about the new Amy Chua book, you should). However, what is evident is that American college students don’t understand the basic science behind the carbon cycle. That’s disturbing because, obviously, knowledge is the first step to understanding the myths and facts about the environment and green living. But if we’re not teaching the science, how can we expect a grounded and realistic discussion about solving the climate change problem?
