There is no substitute for learning, especially when environmental issues keep changing as quickly as they do! Keep up to date when you're not reading with headlines in the TGB Eco-Newsletter!
Though products are our main focus we are avid readers over here, so wanted to share some great reads with you. I know I can hear you saying, books and trees, less reading means more trees, but most of the books we have are also available as eBooks so you can put your conscious to rest.
Have you ever looked at that big pile of cardboard that you need to take on down to the recycling bin and said, “I wonder if there’s not something better that I could do with all of this cardboard than just recycle it? Is there a better use for it?” Well, the truth is that there have, over the years, been numerous examples of amazing design and art using cardboard, and a new book, Outside the Box: Cardboard Design Now, highlights them.

We’re all looking for ways to waste less. Breaking the bad habit of just discarding old or novelty t-shirts along the way is important because it's one of the most wasteful things we do, so when a friend suggested that we look into Generation T – 108 Ways to Transform a T-Shirt to not only reduce our carbon footprint t-shirt mark but also satisfy our crafty side, we jumped on the book. And then we fell in love with the projects.

For as much as we put paint on our face, goop in our hair, and, all too often, pay too much money to artificially make ourselves beautiful, we often overlook the most obvious way to become beautiful: from the inside out. In the latest edition of his classic book Eating for Beauty, expert nutritionist David Wolfe breaks down for us, step-by-step what we can do make ourselves more beautiful through nutrition. Of course we’ll (or most of us will) all still want our daily dose of mascara! We’re still girls, but we can improve our skin tone, body tone, and overall beauty glow through nutrition as well (and, perhaps, better than we can through products).

By now, we all know that we can’t believe any advertising we read about food or food product. The U.S. industrialized food industry uses lobbying, advertising and the payment of experts in the fields of nutrition and diet to steer us towards foods that are neither healthy nor socially conscious. And all of this is documented in Marion Nestles’s Food Politics.

This cookbook is a personal favorite of TGB. If you want to eat vegetarian, or even just reduce the number of days that you’re serving meat in your household, The Vegetarian 5-Ingredient Gourmet is full of quick, simple and, most importantly, tasty meals that don’t require a ton of ingredients (or for that matter hard to find ingredients if you don’t live in a vegetarian Mecca). And they’re all full of nutrients as well.

Whether you love or hate Al Gore’s book and corresponding documentary, it’s become the cornerstone of much of the contemporary environmental debate, and if you’re involved in that debate, you owe it to yourself to be aware of the contents of Mr. Gore’s passion project. Whether you’re learning in order to evangelize or to attempt to find middle ground, An Inconvenient Truth launched much of the discussion that’s going on today and should be required viewing (or reading) for anybody participating in that discussion.

The word most frequently used to describe Bjorn Lomborg’s writing on the environment and global warming is “objective,” followed closely by “balanced.” Cool It is a brief text that gives a holistic overview of what Lomborg considers to be real problems. Lomborg himself has zero patience for media fear mongering, and one of his first tasks is to dispatch the myth of the endangered polar bear (polar bear populations are, in fact, increasing).
